All new drivers want to stay safe on the road and can benefit from as much advice from experienced drivers as possible to help them do this.

After you have been driving for a number of years, it can almost feel like you never learned the task and instead were born knowing how to drive. However, if you think back, not only did you learn how to drive, but you likely made some mistakes along the way.

Learner Drivers Need All the Help and Advice They Can Get

If you know somebody who is either learning how to drive or has recently obtained their license and is about to start driving without supervision, Synthetic Solutions has some great tips for you to share to help them stay safe on the road.

Slow down Speed Racer!

Every driver says that they won’t do it, however, it is all too easy to become competitive with other motorists while you drive. For example:
  • Feeling the need to reach the next intersection first.
  • Making sure you are first in line to merge.
  • Trying to get in front of another driver.
  • Preventing other drivers from entering your lane.
All of the above causes drivers to speed and make mistakes which can cause accidents and is completely unnecessary. Instead of worrying about whether the cars around you are going faster than you are or whether you aren’t going to merge first, worry about what you can do to ensure you and your passengers reach your destination safely.

Know Your Route

Trying to manage pedals, change gears, indicate, turn the steering wheel, and also watch out for other drivers and pedestrians is a difficult enough task without the added pressure of trying to read street signs and worry about being in the correct lane. Combined, this can cause young drivers to become flustered and make mistakes which could have serious consequences. Each time that you drive on a new road or through a new area, instead of relying on GPS, learn the route beforehand and use your GPS device as a backup. In particular, pay attention to any times you will need to change lanes and any landmarks which you can use for directions. Prevent Distractions

Distractions are something which can occur at any time while you are driving and happen to any driver. Because of this, it’s important for all new drivers to take steps to minimize the chances of distractions occurring while they are driving. Each time that you switch on the engine, consider these:
  • Is the radio off?
  • Are your passengers settled?
  • Have you finished texting? Once you have, switch off your phone.
  • Is the car in good shape?
Keeping these points in mind before you drive is a great way to reduce common distractions from occurring.

It’s Either Sleep or Drive

You can’t do the two. And until we have cars which can drive us without any level of interaction required, if you are feeling drowsy then you shouldn’t be behind the wheel. Not only is driving while you are drowsy dangerous, but it’s also unnecessary. For example, if you are planning a road trip:
  • Set a driving schedule to share the task.
  • Find places along the way to stop and refresh your body and mind.
  • Ensure you have a good sleep the night before.
If you are already driving and you can feel yourself becoming tired, don't be shy to swap drivers earlier than your schedule (and you can sleep and make it up later), or pull over safely and take a short nap. Whatever you choose to do, be sure that it isn't driving while tired.
